When we talk about voting rights and voter suppression, what are the actual legal guarantees for voting? There has to be something in the constitution that …
The 24th amendment gives you the right to vote: Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
as a foreign to USA voting sistem, can someone explain to me why direct vote instead of electoral college is not an option there? i get why it was useful back when USA was more of a federetion, but hasn't the electoral college outlive it's usefulness? (honest question here, i don't know, not trying to insult any system)
I think the best possible thing to happen to the political machine would be to outlaw political parties.
Right now, politicians put a D or an R next to their name, and get 60 million votes each simply because of that. If we were to completely ban political parties, there would be no oversimplified roof to choose your vote for, you'd have to actually research your candidate. And with exponential amounts of scrutiny compared to now, they'd be much more likely to act in the people's interest rather than their own.
Unfortunately this will never, ever happen, because %99 of all politicians in service on all levels are one party or the other.
"Time off to vote" – Eh? The US should really stop doing things "because we always did it this way" and do things that are helpful for the people. In my country, we vote on Sunday, because almost everybody doesn't have to work on that day anyways…
The US government was designed to be as non-functioning and deadlocked as possible so nobody could enact significant change on a political level. This would leave the People free to live their lives and be productive without government interference. There's a reason only half the population votes, and it's because only half the population feels compelled to care about politics in their everyday life. This is a good thing, not bad.
The most significant change between then and now is that the size and power of the Federal Government has bloated to such a large degree that a large section of the population are affected by their day to day policies and therefore must be politically active.
What we call "democracy" is just a huge mess of demagoguery. The majority will never be educated enough to make informed political decisions, and appealing only to the educated minority will never win any office. The only way to have a successful political career is by appealing to the ignorance of the majority, thereby insuring that we'll always have the least qualified, ignorant, uninformed people leading the nation. The Roman Republic and the Athenian Democracies fell for a reason. There is no regard for meritocracy.
I mean.. why exactly should felons have the rights to vote? The point of a felony is that it’s so heinous of a crime that you lose constitutional rights (such as right to bear arms, and right to vote) and only keep your human rights.
"There is no good faith argument to be made against these changes"
Yes there is. You want the votes of everyone in the nation to be counted by mail. That's a terrible idea ripe for voter fraud as evidenced by our current election. Make everyone send their vote in by mail and your going to have thousands of of votes show up in areas with no registered voters (like weve found with Michigan) and UPS trucks that just dump truck loads of votes they don't like from rural America on the side of the road.
Many of our election rules that exist to safeguard against fraud work best with in person voting, because it's much harder to pull a fast one while you've got poll watchers from each party looking over your shoulder to make sure they don't catch you trying to pull a fast one, and right now we are even having a hard time enforcing consequences for breaking this rule with poll watchers exclusively from one party were thrown out polling stations because the other party thinks it's their inherent right to steal whatever power they can, and to take political office by force, cheating if they have to because they have lost all tokenary respect for anyone who disagrees with them.
All that this video is saying is that if a political party blocks your right to vote, just vote somewhere else? Like wtf, how does that give us a solution. This is a stupid video that gives us no solution to fix these things
I'd argue against universe vote by mail only because it opens paths of voter fraud especially if we don't put some protections like requiring a notary that it was in fact filled out by the person who it was for. I would want universesal standard though
In Belgium people have both the right and the duty to vote … or, well, since the vote is secret, you have the duty to show up for an election. It's a massive hassle for the poll station crew to deal with all the people who can't come and vote. There's a ton of paperwork … doctor's notes, employer's notes, proof of foreign trips and proxy votes … and, since the rolls are finalized three months in advance … some voters will have passed away in the mean time. However, for the actual person voting, it's a pretty streamlined process. Towns and cities decide whether they want to vote via paper ballots or electronically. In the electronic polling stations the average wait is under 5 minutes. In a paper polling station, you might look at as much as a 30 minute wait … if you insist on voting between 10:00 and 12:00. Counting the electronic votes takes … 2 seconds … literally. The paper ballots take … maybe an evening … sometimes it spills over into the next day. But never more than that.
want direct Democratie, capitalism does not work because the state belongs to the capitalists and not in their interest to improve your position, they are only interested in increasing their profits. Better not be (capitalism is not self-ogranichivat) and we will soon slide into a fascist, and then in a caste society, if we expletively class do not unite to fight for their rights against the bourgeoisie.
4:00 a simple fix wouldn't be to not use the new map until they decide if it fair or not? (am just saying sond like a simple fix but may be law are weird and for those casse doesn't work since it give penality before it finish or something?)
I’m so glad I’m British, I get to avoid all of this!
You shouldn't be able to vote by mail but you should be able to get a paid day off or have a day off to vote must have an ID
So now we have Georgia

8:12 Ok, but Zoe would make a great revolutionary

Video suggestion: Can you do the sinking of the Titanic on Extra History?
0:31 Why did it seem like Matt swore?
Did he said the four-lettered "s" word? Or just the term "shoot"?
In my homeland, voting is mandatory.
Virginia: redistricts to control the house and discourage some from voting
Me a Virginian: wait wut
Soyboys like you shouldn't be able to vote
This is what happened in Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
no one talking about the mail-in election fraud… sad… America is dead if we don't fight for democracy regardless of party lines

Voting is a privilege not a right.

Yielding oversight of state voting to the federal government is potentially very dangerous
"PERFECTLY BALANCED GAME WITH NO EXPLOITS" -spiffing brit
"One party fought against this." Hmmm! Which party could that have possibly have been? HMMMM!
I think we need a Reform Party in America-
Make voting mandatory for everyone over 18+

USA seems surprisingly "undemocratic" for being, allegedly, the "Leader of the Free World".
And no EC
… who has passed a test in logic, critical thinking, economics plus something similar to the US citizen test.

Laughs in country where voting is COMPULSORY
Oof, Extra Crapies became more PC than I last remembered.
In Thailand they have right to vote. But upper class didn't care at all.
How your district is drawn up, doesn’t mean people can’t vote. A lot of misleading BS in this video.
Please stop making videos about american politics
HAHA! "Fixing"! like this would ever happen!
prove me wrong, USA

Oh wow that intro gag was wonderful. Made my day!
There is a right of gunownership in the constitution? These 3rd world countries can not be understood. Im so happy to live in Europe.

very good idea
Voting isn't supposed to be easy. It was intended to be for those who did the research and cared enough to invest the time.
The closest party to passing an amendment is the Republicans via the Convention of States.

I think we need to do some more R&D to make better systems of voting so we do not get caught up in recounts and people claiming voting fraud.
Oh shi
"fewer" polling locations, not "less" polling locations.
